RESPONSE IN SOLIDARITY WITH SURVIVORS OF CLERGY SEX ABUSE IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
PORTLAND, OREGON, August, 22- El Programa Hispano Católico (EPHC) is devastated to learn of the recent reports of expansive and pervasive sexual abuse and the cover up of those abuses by leaders in the Roman Catholic Church in the state of Pennsylvania. We stand in solidarity with those affected and all survivors of violence throughout the world. We honor their courage, strength and righteous rage.
EPHC denounces these abuses and criminal acts. We recognize that these incidents of violence and complicity are not an anomaly, but rather a symptom of a larger systemic problem. While many people and programs within the Catholic Church throughout the ages have fought hard for justice and equality, there have simultaneously been many who are all too prone to abuse of power. The toxins of patriarchy pervade all aspects of Western society, the Catholic Church among them. These acts of violence, including the protection of abusers, cannot be tolerated.
EPHC will continue to speak out against predators and oppression wherever we see it, and to offer education and awareness to the community and support to survivors and their families until abuse is eradicated from the world.
