When Support Makes Safety Possible
Leer en Español
For many survivors of domestic violence, stability begins with being believed and supported. Mataya’s story reflects how our survivor-centered services help people move from survival toward safety and independence.
Finding Support Through UNICA
As a young person, Mataya spent much of her childhood navigating the foster care system. Her early life included experiences of human trafficking and other forms of trauma that deeply impacted her sense of safety and stability.
Becoming a mother marked a turning point.
“After I had my daughter, I just kind of realized life is bigger than just me. I need to prepare myself to be a better person—not just for me, but for my daughter.”
Still, the path forward was not simple. Carrying the weight of past trauma while trying to protect her child, Mataya faced moments of fear, isolation, and uncertainty. Like many survivors, reaching out for support required courage.
Seeking a safer and more stable future, Mataya connected with UNICA and began working with a dedicated advocate. Through that relationship, she found more than referrals – she found consistency, trust, and someone who walked alongside her without judgment.
“I like having someone that I can call or text… no matter what the situation is. I know I have someone to turn to, and they’re not going to lead me down a wrong path.”
When Support Became Safety
For Mataya, the real shift came during one of the most difficult periods of her adult life when she was navigating domestic violence while raising her daughter and trying to build stability.
In those moments, having someone answer the phone, help her think through her options, and stand with her without judgment made all the difference. UNICA’s relationship-based advocacy allowed Mataya to make decisions rooted in safety rather than fear.
She didn’t have to explain or justify her pain. She was believed. She was supported. And she did not have to face those moments alone.
That steady presence created space for something new—not just survival, but the ability to move forward with clarity and purpose.
Building a Future Rooted in Hope
Today, Mataya is a full-time college student completing her prerequisites to become a dental hygienist. For her, education represents independence, stability, and opportunity, not only for herself, but for her child. Her vision for the future is grounded in peace, safety, and joy.
“I want to be relaxed. I want to be at peace. I don’t want to live in fear.”
She dreams of giving her daughter a life grounded in safety and joy, and of one day using her voice to support other survivors of trafficking and exploitation.
At the heart of her message is a reminder many survivors need to hear:
“It’s okay to get help. You might not think you need help, but maybe you just need someone to talk to.”
Why Your Support Matters
Mataya’s journey highlights the life-changing impact of survivor-centered advocacy. Programs like our UNICA program, ensure that survivors are met with dignity, compassion, and culturally responsive support during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
“No one is going to judge you here. They’re just here to help you and get you what you need.”
Your support makes this work possible.
By supporting El Programa Hispano Católico, you help ensure that survivors continue to have access to bilingual advocates, trusted relationships, and pathways toward safety, healing, and hope.
